At the White Tower, Moiraine warns Nynaeve of the complicated political intrigues of the Aes Sedai in the White Tower.

As the Tinkers approach near the White Tower, Perrin and Egwene are captured by Eamon Valda of Whitecloaks, although the Tinkers try to protect them and help them escape.

Valda suspects Egwene could channel One Power, and tortures Perrin to force Egwene to display her ability to channel. In an unexpected situation, Egwene and Perrin escape when the wolves attack the Valda camp. They seem to have some connection to Perrin.

Rand and Mat go to Tar Valon. There, in a library, Rand meets Loial, an Ogier, who notes that Rand looks more like a foreign Aiel than a farmer from Two Rivers village.

Loial reunites Nynaeve with Mat and Rand. Nynaeve seeks to cure Mat's increasingly dark and evil manifestations but to no avail.

Because of their strong bond, Warder Stepin shows much grief and depression over Kerene's death.

Lan tries to comfort Stepin and stays by his side to prevent him from suicidal. However, one night, Stepin tris to give Lan a sleeping pill and find a place to commit suicide.
