The Suicide Squad 2 in the mission against alien monster Starro πŸ“†

The Suicide Squad 2 is a 2021 American superhero film based on the DC Comics team Suicide Squad, written and directed by James Gunn. This is a standalone sequel to Suicide Squad (2016), in which many new and fresh faces are added into the Task Force X.

Suicide Squad 2 is scheduled to be released theatrically in the UK on July 30, 2021 and in the US on August 5, and stream on HBO Max for a month.

In the movie, Task Force X is formed of criminals with superpowers who are being convicted and imprisoned. They are sent in a mission to destroy a Nazi-era laboratory where many political prisoners are held and encounter a giant alien monster called Starro.

Like the 2016 film, Suicide Squad 2021 will spend a certain amount of time telling the biographies, criminal records and special abilities of the new faces in the Squad...

Originally, the 2016 film's director David Ayer was planning to return to direct this Suicide Squad sequel, but he ultimately chose to develop the Gotham City Sirens film.

Warner Bros. considered several alternative directors before hiring Gavin O'Connor in 2017, but the latter dropped out a year later.

James Gunn was hired to write and direct the film after being temporarily fired by Disney and Marvel Studios as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (in 2023).

To write the screenplay for this film, Gunn nurtured  inspiration from war films and John Ostrander's 1980s comic book Suicide Squad. The sequel will explore new characters in a story separate from that of the first movie.

Returning former members include Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag - Leader of the Suicide Squad; Margot Robbie as Psychiatrist Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn; Jai Courtney as George "Digger" Harkness / Captain Boomerang.

Idris Elba as Robert DuBois / Bloodsport

As a mercenary with technologically advanced armor and a special weapon that only he can wield, Bloodsport was convicted after shooting Superman with a Kryptonite bullet. Bloodsport has a young daughter, Tyla, and always wants to get out of prison and be reunited with her.

Bloodsport has many similarities with Will Smith's Deadshot character in the previous installment. In fact, actor Elba was originally cast to replace Will Smith as Deadshot, but the character was later changed to Bloodsport to allow Smith to return and reprise his role later.

John Cena as Christopher Smith / Peacemaker (Peacemaker)

As a peace-loving person in the style of "peace by violence", "peace at all costs". In order to achieve his goals, Peacemaker becomes a ruthless killer, acting instantaneously and recklessly.

Sylvester Stallone as (voice) Nanaue / King Shark

It is a hybrid between a human and a shark, and its favorite food is human flesh. Gunn originally intended to use the hammerhead shark design from the comics, but found it awkward to film the character interacting with other cast due to the hammerhead's eyes on either side of the head.

King Shark has small eyes, big mouth and small head to avoid the "cute anthropomorphic monster" design seen in recent popular characters like Baby Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy), Baby Yoda (the Mandalorian) who usually have big head on small body.

  • Peter Capaldi as Gaius Grieves / The Thinker: An extremely intelligent superhero.
  • David Dastmalchian as Abner Krill / Polka-Dot Man: a "false experiment" that turned him into a criminal in a polka-dotted suit, and he may be the dumbest DC character of all time and hopefully the most miserable character for the film.
  • Daniela Melchior as Cleo Cazo / Ratcatcher: can control rats and communicate with them, and has a pet rat named Sebastian.
  • Michael Rooker as Brian Durlin / Savant: a computer hacker.
  • Pete Davidson as Richard "Dick" Hertz/Blackguard, a mercenary easily manipulated to sabotage his own plans.
  • Nathan Fillion as Cory Pitzner/TDK, a deviant who can detach his arms from his body to use them as weapons.
  • Sean Gunn as Weasel: a anthropomorphized weasel, barely any better or smarter than an animal. He doesn't know what's going on around him.
  • Flula Borg as Gunter Braun / Javelin, a former Olympic athlete who uses a javelin as his weapon.
