The Walking Dead: Dead City 2023 continues the events of The Walking Dead Finale, focusing on two characters Negan and Maggie with a new setting in New York City. The series, directed by Eli Jorné, is broadcast on AMC.

Set a few years after the main series, Dead City follows Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) on traveling to the island of Manhattan, in rescue of Maggie's kidnapped son Hershel Rhee (Logan Kim). The ruined city is filled with the undead and the survivors have turned New York City into their own world full of chaos, danger, beauty and also horror.
Dead City Season 1 Episode 1: "Old Acquaintances"
After an attack on Hilltop, Maggie's son Hershel is kidnapped by later known as The Croat (Željko Ivanek), a former Savior now living in Manhattan. Maggie searches for Negan, on thinking he is the only one who can help her save Hershel. Negan is on the run from New Babylonian marshals led by Perlie Armstrong after allegedly killing five people.
Negan accepts Meggie's offer, in exchange for Maggie allowing Ginny (Mahina Napoleon) - Negan's adopted daughter, to stay at Hilltop.
On their way to Manhattan, Negan and Maggie are chased by Perlie Armstrong (Gaius Charles) group. Negan takes Jano hostage - a young and unskilled officer. In Manhattan, the trio encounter zombies falling from buildings and a game of cat and mouse with Armstrong in an abandoned laundromat. Armstrong accidentally kills Jano, and leaves his other officer killed by zombies.
Elsewhere, at The Croat's base, the man threatens Hershel for information about Negan. Another of Croat's brutally tortured prisoners manages to escape; Croat cut the cable while he is sliding on it.

An old woman named Esther helps Maggie and Negan escape from a horde of undead and lures them to her tribe. The tribe are also being hunted by The Croat's and some kind of Burazis.
Negan reveals that The Croat was one of the first Saviors, in charge of the interrogation, exactly a torturer. One day Croat disobeyed Negan's order and Negan wanted to shoot him dead, but he escaped. Croat has held a grudge against Negan ever since.
The tribe came under attack from the Burazis, severals get killed, including the old woman Esther, before they escape. In retaliation, Negan brutally kills one Burazi to set an example for the rest, as a warning not to follow the tribe anymore.
After Maggie reveals to the tribe her goal of finding her son from Croat, the tribe's leaders Tommaso (Jonathan Higginbotham) and Amaia (Karina Ortiz) agree to help her.
Elsewhere, Ginny struggles to adjust to life in Hilltop, eventually stealing a motorbike and running away. Perlie visits his brother Joel's apartment, but discovers that Joel has committed suicide. Falling into a trap outside, Perlie is captured by Croat.
