The film is the directorial debut of Matthew Lopez, based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston.
The love story between two "Princes" is set in the economic-political relationship between Britain and the United States, and the title of the film refers to the three main colors of the two countries' national flags being red, white and blue.
As the eldest son of President Ellen Claremont (Uma Thurman), Alex is passionate about politics, ambitious, creative, free-spirited, young and ready to fight to protect his happiness. As the second in line to the British throne, Henry is elegant, aristocratic, and knows how to control his emotions and is under accumulated pressure to preserve the image and traditional values of the royal family.
Alex is sent by his mother to attend the wedding of Prince Philip (Alex's brother) and there the two meet and shows no sympathy for each other. An incident happens when Alex carelessly topples a giant £7,000 wedding cake tower right at the wedding ceremony. The sweet tower crashes on both Alex and Henry, and images of the scene quickly spread everywhere; relations between Britain and America starts to show sign of malfunction.
Alex returns to America. Alex's mother is in the process of running for re-election, she is afraid that the incident at the wedding ceremony may affect the trade deal being negotiated with the UK, so she asks Alex to return to the UK to for a reconciliation with Henry, erasing information about the "hate" between the two.
The reconciliation turns into an opportunity for both to develop romantic feelings about each other; perhaps it comes first from Henry, and Alex is the one to welcome it warmly.
Alex's family support their affairs and facilitate the two princes to be together; but at the most sublime stage of their love, Henry decides to end it all because he thinks he is about to cross the line of breaking his royal values.
Alex decides to fly to England again to find Henry. In the meantime, Henry's email is hacked and the romance between the two is exposed to the public; The culprit is an ex-lover of Alex.
In the midst of a media storm swirling about his love story, Alex gives a brave speech, defending the values of privacy, individual freedom and the right to happiness.
Red, White & Royal Blue was released on Amazon Prime Video on August 11, 2003 and quickly became one of the most watched movies on the platform.
The film has been is rated around 7.3/10 on Imdb, favored by the charm and elegance in the plot and on the beauty of the two princes. Things would probably be more interesting if the show aired and in the next few months, during the Christmas season.
