RELATED

Traditionally, male heirs were preferred over female, regardless of birth order, Jaehaerys' grandson Prince Viserys was chosen as his successor instead of Princess Rhaenys Targaryen - Viserys' elder cousin.

Nine years into the reign of King Viserys I, the Triarchy, an alliance formed by the free cities of Essos, threatens the integrity of the Kingdom with the intent to capture the Stepstone region.

Queen Aemma is about to give birth, and Viserys has a strong belief that the child to be born would be a boy to succeed him. He organizes a big tournament to celebrate.

Viserys' younger brother Daemon who was appointed Commander of the City Watch carries out brutal and bloody purges to maintain order in the capital King's Landing. Daemon also attends the Grand Tournament but is eventually defeated by the Dornish knight Ser Criston Cole.

Queen Aemma and the child both die in childbirth. The Hand of the King Ser Otto Hightower proposes that Viserys' only surviving child, the young Princess Rhaenyra, should be made heir to the Iron Throne.

After arguing with Daemon over his right of succession, Viserys declares Rhaenyra his new heir, amid a strange incurable illness he is suffering.
